Questions & Answers

Q: What is the problem?
A: When a user logs into their computer, they don't always make a full connection to the server. When this happens, Windows may create a temporary profile on the workstation for that session. When the user logs out, Windows may delete the profile. This can result in data lost for the user.

Q: Why the change?
A: The change is a response to reports of data loss due to incomplete logins.

Q: What is a "Local Login"?
A:
When a user logs into a computer, the user authentication takes place on the local workstation instead of a directory server like Gopher. The computer then creates a user profile (if one didn't exist already) for the user and all of the users' files are stored on the workstation instead of a server. This environment is common on personal computers at home.

Q: How does the change affect me?
A:
By switching to a local login, the user environment will not follow you to other computers on campus. The login account will exist on your own workstation and not everywhere else in the building. You'll need to know that your workstation is not backed up on a nightly basis so you'll need to manage that by manually copying your files to the server or by using the provided synchronization software (Allway Sync).

Q: How do I backup my files?
A:
You can manually copy your files from your local computer to the server. For more information, please check our video instruction.

Q: Where can I get more information?
